“Orange Is The New Black,” indeed: Piper Kerman gives a TEDx Talk on life in prison

TED Blog

Many of us in the TED office have been in Orange Is the New Black withdrawal. We inhaled the first two seasons of the Netflix series, and have been waiting ever since for the new season to come out. If, like us, the mere mention of the show sends Regina Spektor’s “You’ve Got Time” blasting through your head, then you will want to watch this TEDx talk from Piper Kerman, the woman whose memoir inspired the show.

In the talk, Kerman tells the story of how, at age 34, she was sent to federal prison for delivering drug money a decade earlier. She shares the lessons she learned on the inside — lessons about prison survival, lessons about a broken justice system, and larger lessons about life.

This talk is especially powerful because it was given at TEDxMarionCorrectional, an event held inside a prison in Ohio  that features talks from inmates and employees…

The world of Ingress

A player’s personal set-up for playing Ingress credit: Ingress +Google community

Ingress, a world hidden in our world. A “game” that comes from Google, but is it really only a “game”? I love this game, the story is well written and thought out. Every week we have another piece of the story and the rabbit hole goes deeper and deeper. I’ve been crazy to get back to the world of Ingress, but haven’t been able since the accident. I’m hoping to get back into it in the coming weeks when I get my Lynx pass. It’s going to be good getting out of the damn house and moving around. I’m supposed to anyways, doc said I need to excercise if I want to lower my stupid cholesterol, bah! I know that “ingressing” will be good for me. I really only actively played for one day, and I inmediately ran into people of my faction and they were nice! One of the level 8’s helped me out and I was able to level up to level 2 that same day with his help. I was so excited 🙂 Hoping that in the coming weeks I can level as much as I can, because the play tactics are changing a lot, and it seems like it’s getting harder to level in the new world of Ingress.

Everybody was kung fu watching…

So, I’ve been binge watching a bunch of old and new Kung fu movies, mostly with Jet Li in them at the moment. Last night I experienced the worst one I’ve seen, and not in a, omg that’s so bad is good kind of way! The movie was “Flying Swords of Dragon Gate“. I had never heard of this movie with Jet Li in it, came out in 2012 . I can tell that they did have some money to throw at it, but they either put it in the wrong places or they just got a really shitty effects production house to handle it. The story had some entertaining ideas, but I feel that it could’ve been executed better. I wasn’t able to attach myself or relate to any of the characters, and the fight scenes… oh lord, that is the main reason I watch Kung fu movies, for the exciting fights, but “Flying Swords of Dragon Gate” rather than excite me, made me cringe. They tried doing “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” type of fights, but the effects were so bad that they took away from it. I even would’ve preffered the typical “I can see the wires all over the place” technique that these movies are usually plagued with! Overall it wasn’t as enjoyable as I thought it would be, save some scenes without fighting that actually had good acting and good lines in it.

I am in my 10th hour of watching my The Lord of the Rings collection. I chose to watch them one after the other including the 2 Appendices that each movie includes. Now you may think I’m crazy, or that my “fandom” for LOTR is too much, but really what is “fandom”. I don’t know what the correct definition is, and in fact I really don’t care. Do I need to justify why I  would put myself through hours of content, that of course I’ve already seen before? I love LOTR and that’s reason enough.
